Description
In 1859, Robert Chesebrough, a 22 year old chemist went to the oil fields in Titusville, PA, and learned of a residue called "rod wax" that had to be periodically removed from oil rig pumps. The oil workers had been using the substance to heal cuts and burns. Chesebrough, realizing the potential for this product, took samples of the rod wax back to Brooklyn, and spent years perfecting the process of extracting the petroleum jelly. By 1870, he was manufacturing the petroleum jelly product under the name Vaseline. Within ten years, the product had become a household name. Vaseline was made by the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company (and later Chesebrough-Ponds in 1955) until the company was purchased by Unilever in 1987.
