Description
An Irish-American, Humphrey O'Sullivan, invented the rubber heel by nailing pieces of a rubber floor mat to his shoes in 1896. He received a patent on his invention on January 24, 1899. O'Sullivan patented the rubber heel which outlasted the leather heel then in use.
After developing what was to become known as "America's No. 1 Heel", O'Sullivan arranged for his products to be manufactured by the Boston Belting Company. After several years, he switched to the Goodrich Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, and the O'Sullivan Rubber Company continued with this arrangement for many years. Eventually, O’Sullivan Rubber Company manufactured their rubber heels themselves.
Originally known as the O’Sullivan Rubber Company, the company name was changed in 1970 to O’Sullivan Corporation. This change was made as a result of the company’s growth into plastics, vinyl and other synthetic materials for hand bags; furniture upholstery; automotive dash panels, door panels and sun visor materials; pool liners; and healthcare products.
In 2006, a management team bought out O’Sullivan from PolyOne Corporation, the prior owner. Then in 2010, the company was acquired by Konrad Hornschuch, AG, headquartered in Weissbach, Germany. Today, the company is known as O’Sullivan Films. Rubber heels are no longer produced.
