Description
The popularity of rubber heels reached a major milestone around 1916 when Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company concluded that so many shoe buyers were having rubber heels put on their brand new shoes that they decided to equip shoes with rubber heels at the shoe factories. In 1922 a survey showed that more than 90% of men’s shoes being placed upon the market had rubber heels and about 60% of women’s shoes did.
Estimated rubber heel production for new shoes was about 120 million pair in 1922 with Goodyear responsible for manufacturing 50 million pair. At the time, the rubber heel was their third largest product behind tires and tubes! Goodyear was the world’s largest rubber company in 1926 using the slogan … “More people ride on Goodyear tires than any other kind”.
Today, Goodyear is still one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world but the rubber heel is no longer in their product offering.
